9a.010.SBU - Web Canvas for Immersive Display Ecologies

Project - Summary


The primary goal of this project is to design and develop a framework that deploys web-based visualization applications to dynamic display ecologies. To achieve this, we have defined the following objectives:

  • Develop a pipeline that would effectively render the components of a webpage, in 2D or 3D, onto a defined immersive display ecology.
  • Develop an algorithm that dynamically adjusts the position and scale of the rendered components based on user-centric focus and interaction, adaptive to the defined immersive display.
  • Implement various interaction techniques for large and small immersive displays, beyond the traditional keyboard-and-mouse modality.
  • Add support for web-based visualization libraries such as D3.js.

Project - Benefits to IAB

Effective visualization of data is becoming a critical component in the industry for growth and decision-making. Consequently, as data is becoming massive and multi-dimensional, visualizing the data in high-resolution immersive display technologies can greatly improve the user’s understanding of the information. By using our framework, we lift the barrier of limiting web applications to the traditional desktop setup. Thus, companies can now deliver more 3D content to the users in VR, especially with the growing accessibility to VR hardware among users. Moreover, as our platform supports a diversity of display ecologies, we enable a spectrum of remote collaboration using immersive or desktop setups, connected over the web.
