Biography

Dr. Rong Zhao is Director of Software Systems Division of CEWIT, a faculty member of Department of Computer Science, and an adjunct faculty member of the College of Business and Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook University. At CEWIT, he is responsible for leading the research and development of technology-based solutions. He is Managing Director of the Center for Visual and Decision Informatics (CVDI), which is an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) designated by the National Science Foundation (NSF). At CVDI, he is in charge of managing the center operation and developing collaborative projects in big data management, analytics and visualization. He is also a coordinator for the New York State Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program.

Rong Zhao has more than 20 years of software research and development experience and more than 15 years of project management and technology commercialization experience. His areas of expertise include information retrieval, databases, data mining, machine learning, user interfaces, healthcare informatics, mobile computing, software engineering, agile development, and innovation management. He has published peer-reviewed papers in major journals and international conferences and authored chapters in several books.

Rong Zhao has served as a software architect for several tech startups developing enterprise software, advanced data analytics, and innovative healthcare solutions. He has provided consulting services to several Fortune 500 companies and served as a technical advisor for companies in various industries. He is an advisor for the NYC Data Science Academy, an educational and career development organization providing technical and strategic training in all things data science, and the Long Island Angel Network, which provides access to funding for early-stage tech companies. He has also been retained as an expert witness for a number of patent and trade secret cases.

Rong Zhao holds a PhD in computer science from Wayne State University, an MBA from Stony Brook University, and a BE degree in computer science from Tsinghua University in China.
