9a.010.SBU - Web Canvas for Immersive Display Ecologies

Project - Summary

A framework for porting web-based visualization applications to dynamic display ecologies.

  • Growing visualization techniques and applications
  • Increasing diversity of display ecologies (HMDs, desktops, CAVEs, Gigapixel immersive facilities) with different immersion levels, screen real estate, interaction components, computational and graphics capabilities however, expertise for each facility required for development
  • Current research and works for web-applications are scaling down (i.e. desktop → tablets → mobile phones), but not scaling UP (i.e. desktop → HMDs → CAVEs → gigapixel facilities)

Project - Team

Team Member Role Email Phone Number Academic Site/IAB
Arie Kaufman PI (631) 632-8441 Stony Brook University

Funded by: Softheon

Project - Novelty of Approach

A framework that abstracts low-level web-application design elements required for display ecology and designing visualization applications.

Project - Deliverables

1 Implement the framework and deploy it on Unity3D
2 Use the web engine as the standard web rendering application for large scale displays such as RD, SILO

Project - Benefits to IAB

  • Remote collaboration:
    • An immersive web-application at Softheon can be visualized in the SBU RD and collaboratively at another site X using an HMD
    • COVID has shown virtual collaboration is needed but not all participants have same display setup = a need for seamless collaboration
  • Companies and academic researchers are not limited to expertise for a single kind of display setup
    • For ex: a company with a web dashboard designed for desktop do not have to spend resources on hiring a VR expert developer
