Biography

As the Stony Brook University (SBU) Site Director and Deputy Center Director, Dr. Arie E. Kaufman will manage all of the site activities at Stony Brook University including working with the industrial members and researchers, coordination with the Industrial Advisory Board and other sites; and overseeing the efforts of the Site Managing Director. For more than 17 years, Kaufman has served as the chair of the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University. Kaufman’s primary research thrusts for CVDI are focused on data visualization and data applications.

An internationally recognized leader, Kaufman is a fellow of IEEE, a fellow of ACM, a member of the European Academy of Sciences, and the recipient of the prestigious IEEE Visualization Career Award and numerous other awards and honors.

Dr. Kaufman has made significant research breakthroughs and cutting-edge inventions, including; developing 3D Virtual Colonoscopy, a technique for colon cancer screening that has been licensed, FDA approved, commercialized. He pioneered the use of Graphics Processing Unites (GPUs) and GPU-clusters, especially for accelerating simulation and visualization of flow. Dr. Kaufman developed the Reality Deck, a 1.5 billion-pixel immersive display which is the largest resolution immersive visualization facility ever built, enabling visual analytics of big data. Dr. Kaufman has conducted research for over 40 years in visualization, graphics, virtual reality, user interfaces, multimedia, and their applications, especially in biomedicine. He has published extensively totaling in excess of 300 refereed papers, more than 250 conference presentations, and has been awarded/filed more than 40 patents, most of which have been licensed. He has been a principal/co-principal investigator on more than 100 research grants and he successfully worked with NSF to complete Phase I of the I/UCRC Center for Dynamic Data Analytics at Stony Brook University.
